"Comeuppance" is a delight to read, and contains a sometimes disturbing, sometimes beautiful, but always a vivid conglomeration of seemingly real stories from the American 1960s. (5/5 stars) - Portland Book Review

Those who grew up during the 1960s will find much to bring back their own memories of first loves and losses; those after that generation will find common ground both in the stories and in our current state of cultural upheaval. (5/5 stars) - San Francisco Book Review

In this collection of eleven diverse stories from the Sixties, Michael C. Ahn presents vignettes of a period when bow ties gave way to long hair. Some stories are poignant, others haunting or riveting, but all evoke a decade of shifting mood in the country. A handful of these stories have previously appeared in literary reviews.

In this collection A roommate uses bizarre means to learn about women; a brilliant physics professor is unyielding to a desperate student; a photographer thinks he's found a clever way to seduce a beautiful coed; a sophomore sells paper dresses hoping to buy a car; a student has flashbacks of his lovers, a Vietnamese woman and his former teacher; a returning senior is caught between the hip world and the conventional world while trying to avoid the draft; and a Chinese Texan is invited to join a Jewish fraternity.

I'm enjoying these stories about about how to enjoy life on campus in the 1960s. It's a kind of mythical time for many of us and certainly for the author and for me. Myself, I went to (a boys) school in another country so I never had the experience of women teachers that I could lust for. That must be one reason why Mrs Shelton is my favorite of the stories, so far – Ahn's take on how that experience might, for a lucky few, play itself out. I loved his use of birdsong by the way.

A friend of mine actually met his wife by taking photographs of her – at first, I don't know, but eventually with her consent – so I read into Photo Shot thinking that I knew what to expect. I was completely blindsided! Retina enlargement, frigidity, useless admiration, not at all what I expected, actually a lot more fun.

Comeuppance Stories from the 1960s Michael C Ahn 9780692365939 Books Reviews

Comeuppance is a very good collection of stories. I related to the characters and enjoyed the vivid and easy-to-read prose. The stories are all very different, but they all capture the spirit of the 1960s. I highly recommend that people pick up this book and read these coming of age stories.
Michael Ahn takes us back to college life in the 1960's with unforgettable scenes of great humor and tenderness.
Comeuppance Stories from the 1960s is an entertaining read. I recommend it.
Like one of the other reviewers, I first came across one of Mr. Ahn's short stories elsewhere, in a literary journal together with others. The unique voice of the narration struck me, and stuck with me, and I was delighted to find this collection available on . For me, the collection was less about the 1960s and more about the coming-of-age experience in any era -- finding life experience wherever it presents itself, with a wry self-awareness that I probably aspired to myself, when I was in college.
These short stories were packed with a little bit of everything, each containing a life lesson. They reminded me of my college experiences (both good and bad), leaving me feel waves of nostalgia. I enjoyed the characters, the types of people whom would you find at college even today. I highly recommend this book, especially since this is a quick and engaging read.
Comeuppance
I found it interesting to read these stories of college students in the 60’s when the world had changed so much from my years in college. And yet the experiences were so recognizable to me. The stories are enjoyable and well written. The range of backgrounds and perceptions of the various protagonists are believable and the author’s apparent depth of knowledge about the ethnicities of the characters is impressive. I definitely recommend Comeuppance, especially to college grads wishing to recall that time in their lives.
A fun read. These are stories exposed by the writer as if he was a photographer processing snapshots of characters, mostly students and professors, in their moments of aspiration, denial, vulnerability, release and anguish. Scenes and gestures sparkle with fresh metaphors, as characters are captured in authentic visuals from a clean desk in a Vietnamese motor pool to dorms, closets, labs, frat houses and a lakeside trail. Ahn's characters think, rethink, and unthink the life flows into which they are drawn. They slide in and out of the stories like fishermen who make long casts, and then make the catch, or are pulled in themselves – or both, with a lesson from the unintended snag.
The author's stories recreate the consciousness (and obsessions) of several young college-bound males coming of age during a time not so long ago, yet now somehow exotic. His near-photographic images of the sights and personalities in certain remembered locales will deliver 'Proustian moments' to those who knew them first-hand; and to the many readers who came on the scene later, a window on a vanished world.
